Regulations for Notaries Public Undergo Legal Refinement

The role of a notary public is to, among other things, authenticate the execution of public documents. However, there have been instances where a notary has gone further and offered advice or legal assistance to those signing documents. New regulations passed by the Massachusetts legislature in October, 2016 now explicitly prohibit these and other acts by a notary public unless he or she is also an attorney.
